Circuit City Says “So Long and Farewell”

After 60 years of good business, Circuit City (formerly known as Wards Company at its founding) is going out of business in the United States. According to information on their website, the Canadian stores remain unaffected for now and will not be liquidating their merchandise. What is most sad, however is that about 34,000 employees will be losing their jobs within the next 60-days, save those that decide to remain to work until the liquidation is completed nationwide.
At the time of the liquidation announcement (January 16, 2009), the company operated 567 stores in 153 media markets in the U.S. and approximately 765 retail stores and dealer outlets in Canada. -circuitcity.com
Moreover, the fact that this company survives elsewhere (which is good) is an indication that while America may be falling on hard times, it doesn’t mean that the rest of the world will sink with this ship, so to speak. Circuit City employs approximately 3,000 employees in Canada.
As an aside, everyone definitely wishes that this financial nightmare weren’t happening, but I can’t help but wonder if it will motivate some Americans to run for the border, the northern border?
