Canon 1D Mark IV is to die for!!!

December 29th, 2009 View Comments

I was just reading the write-up on Gizmodo.com about the Canon 1D Mark IVdue out any day now–and blacked out at my computer. This fabulous camera just came out and it’s the McDreamy and McSteamy of DSLR cameras right now (ya like that Grey’s Anatomy reference? LOL!). Just let me quote to you the the tech specs and I’ll stop talking.

The 1D Mark IV uses an APS-H-sized 16-megapixel sensor that’s “similar in size to a Super 35mm motion picture film frame” with a 1.3x crop factor (so not full-frame, booo) , and a normal ISO range of 100 to 12,800, with expanded going up to 102,400 ISO (like Nikon’s fresh D3s). The new 45-point autofocus system has 39 cross-type points and uses a new AI Servo II AF predictive focusing algorithm that’s supposed to be faster, which is handy, since it shoots in 10fps bursts. …

But, let’s talk about video, which Canon isn’t too shy of making the star of this camera: You get full manual exposure control, stereo mic input, and 1080p video at 24, 25 or 30fps; 720p and standard def at 50 or 60fps; and the samples, while obviously Canon-vetted, so far look seriously amazing (that’s a link to a full-res1080p stream of the video above, by Vincent Laforet).

There’s a new auto-lighting optimizer that automatically adjusts contrast and brightness in-camera that sounds sorta like Nikon’s Active D-Lighting. And hurray, a new white balance algorithm that’s better at low color temperatures, something that Nikon’s typically been better with in the past.

“Umm, David you quoted gibberish! Show me what this means” M’kay, no prob. Below are two examples of short films shot with this amazing camera. And let me just say that when I saw these videos, I died. Like someone had to come revive me!

If you have roughly $6000 (camera + warranty) sitting around and wouldn’t mind buying me one of these I’d be your best friend for life! Or loaning it to me for a day would make me the happiest person in the world. No lie! Oh, what’s that? You want me to do your dishes and clean your house for a lifetime? Done! …Anything that puts this lovely device in my hands.

All joking aside, this camera will certainly cause some serious change in the film and photography world besides what revolutionary change these new DSLRs have already brought about–particularly in the area of video for the web.

Okay, enjoy!

Nocturne

“Nocturne” and it’s creator Vincent Laforet have an interesting story because this video was restricted just two months ago from release by Canon. In a nutshell, “Vincent Laforet dropped his short film ‘Nocturne‘ on the scene almost immediately after the Canon 1D Mark IV was announced back in October. The video created a huge amount of buzz in the photography and film making communities in large part because it was shot under available light in the dead of night at ISO 6400. Then, inexplicably, Canon pulled the plug on the video.” (from photographybay.com and confirmed on Laforet’s blog)

Finally, here is the most fabulous work of Philip Bloom, shot on location in Prague as Christmas day was coming into bloom over there. This short film is absolutely gorgeous! …And the music, so incredible! I die!! *dead* It’s too good. philipbloom.co.uk

Sekai Camera

One more thing…

Check out this augmented reality application that’s been developed in Japan. Basically, aim your iPhone camera at anything–mainly in a store, then get attacked by security, in America at least…it happened to me–and your iPhone will begin to pull live data and product info about what you’re aiming at. Read more…

As for the attack by security, I’m exaggerating. But it is true that store managers and security will speak up and say something if they see you constantly aiming your camera of any kind at products in a store. So stupid!

Stay synced!

Sekai Camera Demo (Air Tagging)

Basically this app uses the iPhone camera to view the surrounding area and literally picks up air tags depending on what is in focus. Morever, if you tap one of the tags it provides you with information.

This is way cool!
