Direct link to Apple, Inc’s PR on HTC infringement case

March 2nd, 2010

Read the files of the lawsuits by Apple on gizmodo.com.

As I’m sure many folks have heard by now–I’m just learning about this after a long workday–but Apple has filed lawsuits against Google Phone creator HTC over infringements on 20 iPhone related Apple patents. Below are links to where I orginally learned about the report and a direct link to Steve Jobs’ statements on the matter on apple.com.

As an aside this is probably going to bring down some serious hellacious hate against Apple. But for what? Being douchey? Doesn’t Apple have the right to be a douchebag here? I think so!

Just sayin’.

And below is the link to apple.com of the full statement from Apple, Inc on the matter:

apple.com: Apple Sues HTC for Patent Infringement

CUPERTINO, California—March 2, 2010—Apple® today filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware.

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

Apple reinvented the mobile phone in 2007 with its revolutionary iPhone®, and did it again in 2008 with its pioneering App Store, which now offers more than 150,000 mobile applications in over 90 countries. Over 40 million iPhones have been sold worldwide.

And here is what HTC had to say today in response (via nytimes.com):

HTC responded to the suit stating that, “HTC values patent rights and their enforcement but is also committed to defending its own technology innovations.” The company also said: “HTC only learned of Apple’s actions this morning via media reports, and therefore we have not yet had the opportunity to investigate the filings. Until we have had this opportunity, we are unable to comment on the validity of the claims being made against HTC.”

Tech: Windows Phone Unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2010

February 15th, 2010

Wowza! A literal Windows phone with an all-new Windows Mobile OS. It looks nice and impressive. We shall see what comes of it’s hopeful success once it rolls out to people palms this year. (For the record, I’m a big Microsoft fan. My fan-dom is like this: 60% Apple, 40% Microsoft. I’m not an uninformed fanboy. I know my Mac and Msoft history relatively speaking based primarily on my experience from use.)

Microsoft officially unveiled its new Windows Phone 7 Series at the Mobile World Congress 2010.

See photos of the new Windows Phone 7 Series in the slideshow below.

Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore introduced the new phone and said that the company’s goal was to create ‘a modern phone that fits people’s complex lives.’ Belfiore added, ‘First, we want a smart design that puts the user at the center of the experience. Second, we wanted to design integrated experiences.’

Early reviews of the Windows Phone 7 Series emphasize how different it is from past iterations of Windows Mobile.

Engadget writes, ‘This really is a completely new OS—and not just Microsoft’s new OS, it’s a new smartphone OS, like webOS new, like iPhone OS new. You haven’t used an interface like this before.’

Gizmodo is also excited about the new Windows Phone. ‘Windows Phone 7 Series is more than the Microsoft smartphone we’ve been waiting for. Everything’s different now.’

Tech: Wi-Fi offered on Arizona School Bus for Empire High School Students

February 12th, 2010

Arizona school has implemented the use of Wi-Fi on a school bus at Empire High School. Where the students were once rowdy and doing the things that teens do, they now apparently sit and work on their laptops and are focused. Of course, being school teacher myself, I know that this little change in student behavior is likely a temporal “honeymoon” phase; they’ll be just as rowdy soon enough.

But what I really want to point out is this: will Wi-Fi on buses become a more standard privilege with time. Will other schools or school districts adopt Wi-Fi on buses for high school students as they go to and fro before and after school? Personally, I can’t think of any immediate cons for doing so–the idea seems cool to me.

What do you think?

Video: Square for iPhone review by Kevin Rose

January 18th, 2010

Kevin Rose gave a review of an awesome piece of technology by Square that allows credit & debit card swipe payments. Both the average person and businesses can take advantage of this technology. Below are some really interesting screenshots and a list of features, followed by Kevin Rose’s video on the product.

The buyer can sign his or her name with one finger. I imagine that would seem a little awkward at first. I do think a stylus does work on an iPhone.

Get a digital receipt via email. But if by chance you don’t receive it you can retrieve it on squareup.com.

In general this is really neat!

[Photo]: Japanese McDonald’s takes electronic coupons via iPhone

January 16th, 2010

Post by David Moore

Saw this on dannychoo.com from his A Week in Tokyo 50 series and think it’s pretty rad to be able to just show your coupon on your iPhone to get a discount at McDonald’s or what Danny refers to as McDees (or is that a Japanese thing all around. Folks in Montreal refer to McDonald’s as McDo [doh]).

Re-Report: FCC Calls Operation Chokehold “Irresponsible,” Fake Steve Backs Down

December 18th, 2009

Operation Chokeholdfrom cultofmac.com

As the FCC calls Fake Steve’s fast-growing Operation Chokehold “irresponsible,” Fake Steve is backing down from the protest he started as a joke.

Contacted by ABCNews, the chief of the FCC’s public safety and homeland security bureau warned iPhone users against crashing AT&T’s network. In a statement, he said:

“Threats of this nature are serious and we caution the public to use common sense and good judgment when accessing the Internet from their commercial mobile devices… To purposely try to disrupt or negatively impact a network with ill-intent is irresponsible and presents a significant public safety concern.”

As reported earlier, Fake Steve’s Operation Chokehold — which started as a joke — is growing fast. The number of Facebook fans has jumped from about 300 on Tuesday to more than 2,000 by Wednesday afternoon.

I totally didn’t know about this, but I am not surprised that AT&T has gained the ire of the masses because of it’s network’s performance and policies. I am, obviously, a person on AT&T’s network, with no complaints because my area doesn’t get sucky anything from the company. The only time that I’ve complained about my service is when I’m traveling throughout Florida. AT&T sucks in Tampa, Tallahassee, various parts of Central and Northeast Florida, etc. Just plain crap. But as for where I live for the most of the year, it’s smooth sailing 3G all the way, and raaaaarely is a phone call dropped.

I do dislike one thing with the heat of thousand suns (drama, lol). iPhone owners cannot stream live video like some other phones on their network.

I wonder what AT&T is planning to do to remedy their poor 3G network coverage. According to Verizon, they have the largest 3G network coverage in America. I guess I can take them at their word, right? Too Naive? Eh.

You can read Fake Steve’s response earlier this week (December 16th) about how this little joke spun out of control here.
