Review of Hulu Plus iPhone App: Is it even worth it?

July 7th, 2010 View Comments

Last week I was excited to learn about Hulu finally releasing an iPhone app. I was always eager to see this happen as I always carried the assumption that the app would be essentially like the desktop experience: free episodes of the current primetime television shows that I love and now available in the palm of my hand–on the go. All good and dandy, so long as you’re willing to pony up and pay for it.

Hulu Plus is apparently an app for “Plus Members” only. In order to view the latest video content one has to sign up for a monthly charge of $9.99…or let’s just say 10 bucks.

Now I was immediately disappointed and dismayed because I was under the impression that the shows were free with the only “cost” of having to view episodes after the actual air date. I thought to myself, “Where in translation did Hulu lose this fabulous idea? I promptly and unequivocally stated in an app store review that (paraphrasing), “If you drop it to $5 dollars or less a month, you might get my business. Until then, I’m deleting this app.”

Afterward I scanned the hundreds (at the time) now thousands of reviews placed for this app and the overwhelming majority asserted a similar resolve: Has Hulu gone quackers!? I’m not paying 10 bucks to watch tv when I can just watch them in real time on television, use NetFlix or even iTunes. I think perhaps Hulu has hit a wall and a big one at that.

Mashable posted a question on their Facebook page asking, “What’s your opinion of Hulu Plus? Is it worth the price?”

Here are a few of the responses to that question.

In all fairness to Hulu and in the name of simply good business, the company has to make money to provide a service. It is most certainly a phenomenally novel idea to provide free current primetime TV content online with limited commercial interruption, but that only brings in so much, I assuming. And for the record, I’m not against a SMALL fee for using Hulu Plus on my iPhone, but I’ll be darned if Hulu thinks I’m gonna shell out 10 bucks a month for what I can get elsewhere on a much larger screen.

Somehow, Hulu must find a way overcome this hurdle or that app will go into the trash bin of app store history. I don’t think that I’m only ono this one. What do you think?

[Live Blog] In the iPhone 4 line

June 23rd, 2010 View Comments

11:24pm
I am coming to you live from the iPhone 4 line. I feel vastly under prepared compared to the folks I’m sitting by, with their portable fold out chairs, blankets and pillows. There’s even a group of guys that came together and are playing cards with a cooler as I type this post.

I have never done this before and have decided to give it a try as a type of social and cultural experience. I’ve read for years now about people that do this and it was easy to write them off as quacks with nothing better to do. Let’s see how far down the fanboy, rabbit whole goes.

Ahead of me are approximately 35 people eagerly waiting.

Ok. Stay tuned…

11:34pm
Check out out my new friends and their setup.

[Update - 5/25/2010]: This is Sean. He was awesome enough to allow me to plug in my iPhone. I am very grateful to him because I was able to continue blogging from my iPhone via the WordPress app.

11:57pm
Alright before I give it a rest for a while, here is what I brought with me: food, video camera/point-and-shoot, mini tripod and more food. Line’s growing by the way.

1:28am

Getting longer still. People are trickling in, although it has slowed down. But wait a few more hours and there will definitely be more people.

1:38am

So just minutes ago the lights in the parking garage just went out. It was either on a timer or the mall folks are trying to tell us something. lol

2:00am

As I’m sitting here waiting in the dark, in the line. I think that it has exceeded 100 people, as cars continuously stream in. Also I was reading online about a number of cases where people are losing bars of reception on their iPhone 4′s when the hand comes into contact with the outer metal ring. It appears that this may be a hardware issue. ….I’m not gonna say a word. These people in the line might not take too kindly to news like that. Read more about it on Mashable here.

By the way I am live blogging from my iPhone using the WordPress iPhone app. Been having to do re-attempts at publishing updates though, but they eventually go through.

2:32am

I just came across an interesting tweet that President Obama’s administration will be releasing a new iPhone/iPad app for his “Organizing for America” campaign. Read more…

Alright. I think I’m gonna try to catch a few Zzz’s. Gute nacht!

5:34am

We’ve all woken up, mainly because the lights in this hot parking garage jerked the line awake. Now this photo doesn’t do it justice but the line you’re seeing faintly in this photo extends to the end of the garage and wraps around, according to other folks in line that took a trip to the back.

I am convinced that Apple did not anticipate such a response this year!

6:26am

We’ve been assembled a sort of semi single-file line and are about to enter the mall hopefully in a civilized and orderly fashion. Hold that thought….

6:38am

We are inside the mall arranged Into two lines: reserved and a snowball’s chance, if you get my drift.

[Update 5/25/2010]: As the Fire Marshalls and the Apple employees opened the doors of the mall to allow us to enter, there were people that we kept our eyes on constantly during the long hours waiting over night. These people that were never in the line, mind you, hovered near the front of the line all night and morning. Just as we entered the mall one skipper shot straight for the “snowball’s chance in hell” iPhone 4 line and two for the reserved line. Almost immediately about 50 people combined from both lines started protesting and pointing them out –literally yelling at the three people that skipped. When the Apple Store manager and employees came out, these 50 or so people shouted them down to remove the skippers from the line. The skipper held their ground for about 10 minutes or less (I know this because they were behind me in the reserved line). The one skipper in the “not a chance…” line was told to leave too.

I know what some might think. That’s a bit much for people to band together and become visibly angry enough to get someone kicked out of line “over a phone”. However, I think that they were justified based on how stressful waiting in the line was and to have this person park near the mall entrance, blatantly walk up and claim a place in line like it’s the gold rush. They were wrong. It wasn’t fair and we all saw to it that the first to come were the first served. And seeing as how I was among the first 30 people in the reserved line, I think I was among the first 10 or less people to walk out with an iPhone 4. And amazingly those same protestors cheered as I left as one of the firsts. All we wanted was fairness. Is that too much to ask?

“But still it was all over a phone!” My answer to people who say this is, “Tell me there is nothing that you absolutely like or wanted so much that you wouldn’t wait in a long line for hours over–in spite of it’s level of frivolity. Better yet, have you already done something like that?” *CRICKETS!*

8:40am

Finally home. Sadly my HF10 internal storage filled up because I forgot to empty it while in the line. So the last thing I was able to record was me unboxing my iPhone 4 in the Apple Store. Good enough I think. Just as the Apple guy activated my phone I strangely lost functionality of my iPhone 3GS camera. Actually, I don’t think it was due to the activation, but rather that I ran out of storage space for more photos.

I did not sleep well so I am extremely tired and sleepy. If I do something today, I will post photos of my new iPhone unboxing in the very east.

Testing the WordPress iPhone app [UPDATED]

June 22nd, 2010 View Comments

I am just trying to see how well this WordPress app publishes photos taken with my iPhone. In the past this app has been wretched.

What bothers me with this app is that I can’t place the photos where I want them to be in the post. If you happen to know a way for this to be done please let me know.

Thanks!

A little while later…

…oh wait I figured it out. The code for the photo shows up at the bottom and I can just select, cut and paste where necessary. While it’s tedious on an iPhone it’s effective.

Good night…er morning. lol

By the way here is a screen shot of my home screen after spending literally an hour organizing my apps into folders categorically. I love this new OS despite it’s faults, which is for another blog post later on. Sheesh!

[UPDATE]

I failed to give credit to a cool twitter follower that lead me to the awesome iPhone/iPod Touch apps bookshelf you see above. He’s knunez on twitter. Thanks Kevin!

If you’d like this wallpaper on your homescreen too, you can just go here with your iPhone’s twitter app. (For this to work as your homescreen wallpaper you will need to have updated your device to iOS4.)

  1. Tap the image or link (depending on your twitter app in use).
  2. Tap the screen again to clear the controls.
  3. Do a screen grab of the image.
  4. Go to your photos album and make it a wallpaper like usual and you’re done.

You’re welcome!

iPhone 4 Wallet, ID Credit Card Case from case-mate.com

June 19th, 2010 View Comments

I just started entertaining the idea of an iPhone case for my future iPhone 4. Did a casual Google search and came across this really neat case on case-mate.com. It evidently has been around for the iPhone 3G/3GS and I’m wishing I knew this earlier. I think it’s a cool for when I don’t want to carry both my wallet and phone because I’m one of those people that constantly does the patting of the pants thing every 30 minutes. No lie. I’m sure people think I’m crazy, but this may cure my ailment. lol

It’s not available right now because it’s temporarily out of stock. Figures, given the pre-order madness for the mobile device and makes me cringe at the thought that we could see lines close to that of June 2007 for the first iPhone. Oy! But I digress.

I give this case 4 out of 5 M’s for what it does, minus one M because I fear it will be slightly bulky.

Here are it’s features (emphasis is based on what I like most):

  • Easily fits 2 credit card size items
  • Only 2.5 mm thicker than Case-Mate’s award-winning iPhone 4 Barely There case
  • iPhone 4 screen protection kit included
  • Access to all iPhone 4 ports and controls

If you’re interested in this case as much as I am, you can sign up here to be notified by email when case is available for ordering again. :/

Here is a screen capture I took with Skitch. I hope case-mate.com doesn’t mind.

Will I lose my Unlimited Data Plan when I switch to iPhone 4?

June 11th, 2010 View Comments

No. You will not lose your Unlimited Data plan when purchasing the iPhone 4, assuming you already have a smartphone.

My close friends and I were talking about this question yesterday while at work. So I did a simple browsing of AT&T’s forums and found a page with a clear answer. In so many words, it states that you have the option of switching to the new available plans, but you do not have to. So I’m personally glad to know I won’t lose my unlimited data plan.

[AT&T Moderator]: Thank you for taking the time to post your comments, inquiries, and suggestions regarding the New Smartphone Data Plans. We see that there is much discussion and some confusion regarding these new plans.

We would like to begin by saying that current Smartphone customers are not required to switch to the new plans but can choose to do so without a contract extension. In addition, current Smartphone customers with the unlimited data plan are not required to switch to the new plans if they renew their contract or switch to another Smartphone; however, if you choose to change to one of the new lower-priced plans, you will not be able to go back to your unlimited plan in the future. All NEW activations or new-to-Smartphone upgrades must choose from the New Smartphone Data Plans. Read more…

Finally, if you want to know about your upgrade eligibility dial *639# on your mobile device and you’ll get a text message from AT&T. Or you can just go to MyWireless: att.com/wireless/iphone.

You’re welcome! *bows* jk

New Android App: Fuze Meeting

June 11th, 2010 View Comments

Android has it’s fist mobile meeting app from the creators (Fuze Box) of the Fuze Messenger and Fuze Movie. It’s very basic. Simply login upload what content you want or need and you can meet with people practically anywhere.

Here are the key features for this app:

  • View desktop sharing – Android attendees gain an unprecedented ability to view meeting participants’ desktops, files and presentations on-the-go and in real-time, while synced with the meeting presenter. The viewing quality and precise synchronization set the standard for visual collaboration among smartphones.
  • Actively participate in media collaboration – Attendees are able to watch and listen to high-quality video and audio – start, stop and pause with the same level of functionality as meeting hosts have.
  • Contribute content with presenter functionality – Once the meeting host designates an Android attendee as a presenter, users can share video or image files by uploading directly from their device.

To learn more about it visit the Fuze Meeting Android page.
