Review of Hulu Plus iPhone App: Is it even worth it?

July 7th, 2010 View Comments

Last week I was excited to learn about Hulu finally releasing an iPhone app. I was always eager to see this happen as I always carried the assumption that the app would be essentially like the desktop experience: free episodes of the current primetime television shows that I love and now available in the palm of my hand–on the go. All good and dandy, so long as you’re willing to pony up and pay for it.

Hulu Plus is apparently an app for “Plus Members” only. In order to view the latest video content one has to sign up for a monthly charge of $9.99…or let’s just say 10 bucks.

Now I was immediately disappointed and dismayed because I was under the impression that the shows were free with the only “cost” of having to view episodes after the actual air date. I thought to myself, “Where in translation did Hulu lose this fabulous idea? I promptly and unequivocally stated in an app store review that (paraphrasing), “If you drop it to $5 dollars or less a month, you might get my business. Until then, I’m deleting this app.”

Afterward I scanned the hundreds (at the time) now thousands of reviews placed for this app and the overwhelming majority asserted a similar resolve: Has Hulu gone quackers!? I’m not paying 10 bucks to watch tv when I can just watch them in real time on television, use NetFlix or even iTunes. I think perhaps Hulu has hit a wall and a big one at that.

Mashable posted a question on their Facebook page asking, “What’s your opinion of Hulu Plus? Is it worth the price?”

Here are a few of the responses to that question.

In all fairness to Hulu and in the name of simply good business, the company has to make money to provide a service. It is most certainly a phenomenally novel idea to provide free current primetime TV content online with limited commercial interruption, but that only brings in so much, I assuming. And for the record, I’m not against a SMALL fee for using Hulu Plus on my iPhone, but I’ll be darned if Hulu thinks I’m gonna shell out 10 bucks a month for what I can get elsewhere on a much larger screen.

Somehow, Hulu must find a way overcome this hurdle or that app will go into the trash bin of app store history. I don’t think that I’m only ono this one. What do you think?

Testing the WordPress iPhone app [UPDATED]

June 22nd, 2010 View Comments

I am just trying to see how well this WordPress app publishes photos taken with my iPhone. In the past this app has been wretched.

What bothers me with this app is that I can’t place the photos where I want them to be in the post. If you happen to know a way for this to be done please let me know.

Thanks!

A little while later…

…oh wait I figured it out. The code for the photo shows up at the bottom and I can just select, cut and paste where necessary. While it’s tedious on an iPhone it’s effective.

Good night…er morning. lol

By the way here is a screen shot of my home screen after spending literally an hour organizing my apps into folders categorically. I love this new OS despite it’s faults, which is for another blog post later on. Sheesh!

[UPDATE]

I failed to give credit to a cool twitter follower that lead me to the awesome iPhone/iPod Touch apps bookshelf you see above. He’s knunez on twitter. Thanks Kevin!

If you’d like this wallpaper on your homescreen too, you can just go here with your iPhone’s twitter app. (For this to work as your homescreen wallpaper you will need to have updated your device to iOS4.)

  1. Tap the image or link (depending on your twitter app in use).
  2. Tap the screen again to clear the controls.
  3. Do a screen grab of the image.
  4. Go to your photos album and make it a wallpaper like usual and you’re done.

You’re welcome!

Farmville At 7-Eleven

Obviously Zynga has come quite a long way. Got a nice deal here with 7-Eleven and an iPhone app in the works for Farmville. Sing it with me y’all! “Movin’ on up to the East side. We finally got a piece of the pie!”

Btw, I snapped this with my iPhone while getting gas at 7-Eleven. (To totally digress for a moment, I have to say that I love my iPhone 3GS’s camera feature. It has come in handy ever since I accidentally broke my point-and-shoot camera in New York City last summer. More importantly, in light of the great quality that the 3GS delivers I am even more excited about getting my reserved iPhone 4 next Thursday!)

Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculture Garden releases iPhone app

June 11th, 2010 View Comments

Recently the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum’s exhibition is holding not only a physical exhibit, but now through mobile devices via it’s new iPhone app for “Yves Klein: With the Void, Full Powers”. Now frankly, I’m not all that interested in the exhibit itself, however I am impressed with the Smithsonian’s move into mobile technology and information age with this awesome step forward. In other words I believe more and more are catching on to the amazing future in mobile technology. Further, this initiative is not stopping short at the iPhone, but also plans to bring this same application to the Android market as they plan to share future exhibits through mobile applications. Download the iPhone app here.

Exhibit info:

Klein (French, b. Nice, 1928; d. Paris, 1962) is one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. He took the European art scene by storm in a prolific but brief career that lasted only from 1954 to 1962. The Hirshhorn is the opening venue for this landmark retrospective, co-organized with the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The exhibition features examples from all of Klein’s major series, including his Anthropometries, Cosmogonies, Fire Paintings, planetary reliefs and blue monochromes, as well as selections of his lesser-known gold monochromes, pink monochromes, sponge reliefs and immaterial works and examples of “Air Architecture.” The installation also presents arrays of ephemera that demonstrate the full extent of Klein’s creativity, including sketches, photographs, letters, writings and several films–both performances and documentaries.

Video: Engadget hands-on with iPhone OS 4

This is a really great development in iPhone OS news. I think I’m most excited about the multitasking more than anything for the iPhone. And it appears that Apple figured out an effective way to do it without too much affect on the battery life.

To reiterate what I said on twitter, I toyed with jumping ship from the iPhone if Apple wasn’t going to bring multitasking to the device. In hindsight, I’m glad I didn’t.
