I believe they replaced it with the same chip. The issue was that the
chip that I had was defective from the manufacturer. Now assuming
they didn't place another defective chip in my laptop, I would hope
that it will not fail again. Is there any accounts of people having
the graphics card fail again after repair?

What graphic chip did they replace the old 8600m GT with? If they put the same motherboard with same nvidia chip, your macbook pro can burn again…
