I recently asked via a tweet on Twitter.com the following:

This is my implicit social contract: If you follow me, I try to greet you. If you say nothing I probably unfollow you. What would you do?

  • @Edwin Thanks Edwin! Perhaps I should not only wait two days or so for a reply, but when I reply DM them instead of an @. ...Or does it not matter?
  • When I first started using Twitter, I didn't see the significance of replying back. Maybe it was because I initially followed people that did the same. These were the internet celebrities that had thousands and thousands of followers. I just assumed it was the norm. As I started following more people and got more followers, I realized the importance of greeting and thanking people for taking the time to follow. I'll normally do it with a private DM.

    BTW, I think when I first followed you, I was one of those that didn't reply back. I'm glad you didn't unfollow me! I like reading your tweets and knowing what you're up to. :)

  • I would probably give silent followers some time (a day or two?). They may not know what's going on. But not TOO long, it is a SOCIAL media tool.
